Natural Landscapes
This painting is a commission for Matthew Smith. His vision was to incorporate reflections of light in windows into an O'Keefe-inspired landscape. I thought this was a unique idea, so I gave it a shot. He sent me several photographs of windows with reflections of the city in them. He lived in downtown Evanston and so do I--consequently, I was familiar with the peculiar ripples of light flowing across them, like linear ribbons. I came up with this response, which is quite more stylized than any other landscapes I have painted. I enjoyed the simplicity in O'Keefe's paintings, and found the process to be quite liberating. He passed away recently, and he bought three paintings from me before he died. I'd like to think that my paintings gave him solace at the end of his life.
